Free agent signings

  • Another key signing was cornerback Jourdan Lewis from the Dallas Cowboys. He signed a 3 year $30 million contract with $20 million of it guaranteed. While he is not a pro bowl or all pro player, Lewis will be entering his 8th year in the league, and is a needed veteran at the position. This signing has prompted a lot of conversation regarding the draft. This move will likely send Jarrian Jones to the outside, pairing him along side Tyson Campbell. Will Johnson, who is the highest regarded defensive back in the draft, was a name to watch in the draft for the Jaguars, but with this signing, he is likely eliminated off the teams draft board.

  • Moving players

  • Some key names were let go by the team as well. Center Mitch Morse, who signed a 2 year deal last offseason, announced his retirement. The move has opened up the roster spot, but free agent signing Patrick Mekari is extremely versatile and is capable of playing every position on the line, and it is likely that either he will be the teams center, they will draft one, or both. RG Brandon Scherff is an unrestricted free agent who is currently unsigned. Mac Jones is an unrestricted free agent who signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, and was replaced by Nick mullens. In a suprising move to some, tight end Evan Engram Luke Farrell was an unrestricted free agent who has been signed by the San Franciso 49ers to a three-year contract worth up to $20.25 million, with $11 million guaranteed.

  • Christian Kirk was traded to the Houston Texans for the Los Angeles Rams original 2026 7th round pick. The move saves Jacksonville $10.5 million in cap space, resulting in a $10.7 million dead cap, per Spotrac. This move was the most discussed move by the Jags. Many felt that a veteran who has chemistry with Trevor should be kept, especially because there is only one year left on his deal, and now he is on a division rival. However others have stated that this was the right move, given his injury history and dip in production the last 2 years after a stellar start with the team. Ronald Darby was released, saving the Jaguars $2.44 million in cap space, resulting in a $2.7 million dead cap, per Spotrac. Andre Cisco signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the New York Jets. Both these players had the worst year of their careers and played a huge part in the Jaguars struggling defense, and have now found new homes where they look to get back to form.

  • Ultimately this was not a star studded class, and that was not the goal. The team needed quick improvements with veteran players, as the team will look to build through the draft. Positions such as the offensive line and defensive back were addressed and improved. James Gladstone has stated he is starting with raising the floor of the team before the ceiling, and one free agency class in, he has done this.
